Patrick Wolff is one of the next generation of American GM's. He was born on February 15, 1968 and learned to play chess at age 9. He became the National High School champion and the US Junior champion in grades 9 and 10 respectively. Before attending university, he traveled in Europe for a year, where he received the title of IM. On his return to the US, he promptly won the US Junior Championship for a second time, and received the Samford Fellowship, which is given to the top chess player under 25 years of age each year for a period of 2 years. It is worth $30,000 per year. Within a year of receiving the Samford Fellowship, he attained the title of International Grandmaster. He has made 5 appearances to the US Championship Tournament and has won twice, in 1992 and 1995. Apart from the book he wrote in 1995 about the World Championship Match, GM Wolff has also written many instructional chess videos as well as articles for chess magazines (e.g. Chess Life). He also gives lessons and has taught both children and adults. Patrick graduated from Harvard University and is currently working in the Boston area.
